Do you need a UPI PIN to receive money?

One important distinction for everyday digital payments.

The short answer

You do not need to enter a PIN or OTP to receive money. RBI advises caution with QR codes and links from unknown sources.

Pause before entering a PIN

A person promising to pay you may ask you to scan a code or enter a PIN. Receiving money does not require your PIN or OTP. Stop and check what the app actually says before taking an action.

Read the action, not the message

Look at the transaction inside your own payment app. A chat message or a screenshot is not the same as a confirmed credit to your account. Never share your PIN or OTP.

Check the official guidance

RBI publishes public awareness material about QR fraud. Use the source below to review that guidance directly. Contact your bank through its official channels if you suspect a fraudulent transaction.
